Abstract Expressionist Adventures
Fain Elementary School 5th Grade Art Students
Led by Teaching Artist Daniel Juarez
During the first three weeks of the fall semester, artist Daniel Juarez taught the 5th-grade art students at Fain Elementary concepts of Abstract Expressionism, inspired by works in the WFMA Permanent Collection. Students learned how to use physical objects as inspiration to create expressions of emotion or experience with abstract visual elements. Students’ works will be displayed in the WFMA Art Lounge alongside the pieces from the Permanent Collection that guided the project, with a celebration family event on Saturday, October 2.
Alebrijes at the WFMA
MSU Spanish Language and Art History Students
Led by Teaching Artist Auria Sánchez-Henríquez
Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, teaching artist Auria Sánchez-Henríquez will work with MSU Spanish Language and Art History students and faculty to create sculptures inspired by alebrijes. Alebrijes, often depicted in Spanish folk art, are “spirit animals” that guide the spirits of ancestors on their journey through the land of the dead. Through the exploration of 3D artistic techniques, line, and color, the project will illuminate the connection among visual language, self-expression, and cultural tradition. Celebrate the culmination of this academic experience alongside MSU students at the Día de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead Festival in downtown Wichita Falls this fall.
This project is open to the public!
Café con Leche Curates!
Café con Leche High School Students
Led by WFMA Curator Danny Bills
The WFMA is partnering with Café con Leche to give college-bound high school students hands-on museum experience. Kicking off during Hispanic Heritage Month 2021 and throughout the fall semester, students will help curate an exhibition of works by regional Hispanic artists under the direction of the WFMA’s curator, Danny Bills. Follow @wfmamsu to experience the journey of these student curators first-hand. Additionally, mark your calendar on March 5, 2022, to be among the first to celebrate their accomplishments at an opening reception of Café con Leche Curates in the WFMA galleries!
