"14 Words"

This life-size sculpture, titled “14 Words,” is cast to look like a human skeleton. Our skeletal system supports and protects the rest of our body. In this sculpture, bones are held together by thin wire, the ends of which curl and trail in space. The bones look sewn or woven together, and this suggests recalling them from separation, like a memory. Attached to the skeleton are fourteen words: bread, clay, salt, fox, smoke, river, shell, milk, sparrow, field, pine, moon, bowl, rain. These elemental things call to mind experiences that, we might say, touch us to the bone. I imagine a longed for rain that finally comes, the majesty of a river, moonlight as bright as day…
