Brett Weston: Photographs

Brett Weston was one of the most prolific and respected photographers of the twentieth century. His father, the famous photographer Edward Weston, knew his son’s promise even at the young age of fourteen, declaring Brett had an “assured future” in the medium. Today, however, his son is a relative unknown. Yet Brett Weston is a significant modern American artist. His photographs capture the essential forms of nature and found objects in ways that embody and encourage new ways of seeing. They capture the “truth of things,” as he and fellow modern photographers would put it.  

This exhibition presents Brett Weston’s unique vision and technical mastery of photography, exploring the artist’s history, philosophy, and process. It also celebrates the extensive donation of fifty of the artist’s gelatin silver prints—all printed by Weston—to the Wichita Falls Museum of Art’s collection from Oklahoma collector Christian Keesee through The Brett Weston Archive. Spanning over five decades, the work in these galleries include subjects from New York City, New Mexico, Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, and the deserts, mountains, and beaches of California.  

The exhibition also demonstrates the evolution of the artist’s style to the precise, detailed, abstract images for which he is known. These photographs invite us to revel in the power of the visual, energized through the power of the camera to transcend the limits of human vision. The intensity of these photographs in their internal geometries and determined examination of their subjects matches the force with which the artist engaged the world.  This intensity—combined with their intimate size and the uncanny qualities of their strangely familiar yet foreign imagery—draws us in, enticing us to slow down and look closely to better see and experience these exquisite objects and their imagery. Weston’s photographs also invite us to contemplate the power of art to shape our ways of seeing the world outside their frames.
