Print Rally and Market 2024 logo

Print Rally 2024 was a collaboration between the Wichita Falls Museum of Art and Fain Fine Arts College at MSU Texas. The Museum reached out to the surrounding area Jr. High and High School Students and invited them to carve their own woodblock plate and experience printmaking for the first time! The students’ work will be added to the Museum’s Education Collection and on display in the Museum until November 8th, 2024.

Over 200 people stopped by to see what our community created and visit campus during Homecoming Week. During our community event for Print Rally, there was live steamroller printing, live Screenprinting of T-Shirts, Lego Plate Printmaking Activity, a collaborative banner activity, and Food and Art Vendors.

This event is made possible due to the 2023-2025 Fain, Edwards, Bridwell Grant that was award to the Museum. This is the Museum second time using this grant to fund this event. A big thank you to United Rentals for providing the steamroller and Midwestern State University Fain Fine Arts print studio for your contributions.

The following schools are participating in the event: Legacy High School, Memorial High School, Barwise Jr. High, Hirschi Middle School, City View Jr. High and High School, Christ Academy, Nocona High School, and Iowa Park High School. Over 140 students and artists, including MSU Texas students, alumni, and WFMA staff, are carving their woodblocks.

About:

Print Rally is the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at MSU Texas’s largest community and recruitment printmaking event. Starting in Fall 2023, as a collaboration between MSU School of Art print studio, the WFMA invited local and surrounding area junior high and High School students to participate in the action. It began with outreach to art teachers, including class visits, WFMA meetings, and carving process demonstrations.

In the first year, the event was called Steamroller Event. At a steamroller event, printmakers ditch their printing presses to go outside and print using an industrial steamroller! The WFMA invited art teachers and their students from Rider High School, Wichita Falls High School, Nocona High School, Barwise Jr. High, Kirby Jr. High, and McNiel Jr. High to participate. The students were introduced to the process of relief printing using woodblocks. Participants were invited to carve wooden plates in various sizes and imagery. For most participants, this was their first experience with printmaking! Other participants included WFMA staff, MSU Alumni, and MSU Printmaking students.

The event was held at Midwestern State University in the printmaking studio of the Fain Fine Arts department. Over 60 people stopped by to see the action! We printed both inside the studio and outside with the steamroller. A big thank you to United Rentals for providing the steamroller and WFISD and Midwestern State University Fain Fine Arts print studio for your contributions. All the artworks made at this event have become a part of the Wichita Falls Museum of Art’s Education Collection.

For Fall 2024, the WFMA changed things due to the popularity and success of the 2023 Steamroller Event. The event is now called Print Rally and Art Market.
