What is abstraction?
Abstraction uses visual language, like line, color, and shape, to express thoughts and feelings about life. Have you ever wondered how artists create abstract pieces? Even abstract art comes from a word, experience, or inspiration. We often think of watercolor as making beautiful landscapes or floral paintings. Experience watercolor in a fun new way in this two-part workshop!
How will we start?
Using art by American artist Emmi Whitehorse on view at the WFMA as a jumping off point, you will learn the basic techniques of watercolor painting as you explore abstract art. There will be plenty of paper, so come ready to play with this accessible art medium.
Explore art by Emmi Whitehorse:
- Read an article from the Arts & Culture Magazine, Pasatiempo.
- Peruse the artist's website.
- Learn about the artist's role in the Art in Embassies program.
This beginner level workshop will focus on:
- Watercolor techniques such as wet on wet, wet on dry, blending, and layering
- Composition (the arrangement of elements on the paper)
- Color theory
- Collage
