What is your voice?
This workshop uses a repurposed hardcover book to create an art journal, a technique known as “second voice journaling” or “art junk journal.” Inspired by the current exhibition Finding Your Voice, featuring works by Hispanic, Latino, and Chicano artists, this workshop invites you to observe how contemporary artists use visual language to share personal experiences of cultural identity or heritage that contribute to the human family. Through the artist’s book medium, participants may explore the unique elements of heritage that have shaped one’s own life.
What should I expect from this workshop?
This is a two-part workshop. In the first class, after seeing the current exhibition Finding Your Voice, you will choose a hardcover used book and begin to prepare pages with a gesso layer for painting later and/or create collage pages. In the second class, you will continue collage, create paintings on the gesso pages and/or write black-out poetry.
What do I bring?
Participants may choose to bring a hardcover book you don’t mind turning into art; and magazines, photographs, letters, ribbon, etc. for collage. All materials, including books, will be provided!
