Exploring the art of Romare Bearden and his print titled, "In the Garden," in the WFMA’s current exhibition Visual Voice, we will consider your relationship with nature, in your own garden or wherever you enjoy the outdoors. We will think about the emotion nature instills in you and the ways to visually express this personal experience, using dried botanicals, paper, and paint along with texture, color, and depth.

What should I expect from this workshop?
This is a two-part workshop. In the first class, after seeing Bearden’s artwork, you will press and dry botanicals of your choice and prepare a canvas with a background to receive your collage elements. In the second class, you will create a composition using your dried botanicals, paint, and paper. Like Bearden, we will take everyday items and put them together to create a comprehensive story or expression of an idea.
What do I bring?
Participants may choose to bring any types of leaves or flowers from the yard, any already dried botanicals from past special occasions, or any collage materials, such as old letters, handmade paper, photographs, etc. that you don’t mind turning into art. All other materials, including botanicals, will be provided!
