Renée Stout was born in Junction City, Kansas and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she received a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University. She has lived and worked in Washington, DC, for decades, where she has become a fixture of the arts community. Finding inspiration in African cultural roots and African-American traditions, she also does not shy away from contemporary issues. Stout creates sculpture, paintings, installations, drawings, photographs and prints, deftly using whatever medium seems appropriate for her artistic vision.
