A resident of St. Amant, Louisiana (outside Baton Rouge), Douglas Bourgeois received a BFA from Louisiana State University. Bourgeois is one of the highly recognizable “Visionary Imagists” of the contemporary American South. His meticulously rendered paintings, with obsessive attention to detail, are fascinating juxtapositions of characters and iconography pulled from popular culture of the 1950s through today. Bourgeois has exhibited extensively since the 1980s, with works in the permanent collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, New Orleans Museum of Art, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum and numerous other institutions. The artist was subject of a touring exhibition/ book “Baby-Boom Daydreams: The Art of Douglas Bourgeois” (Dan Cameron, Hudson Hills Press, 2003). Bourgeois was prominently featured in New Orleans’ 2014 “Prospect 3,” with the Contemporary Art Center exhibiting 17 paintings from throughout his career.
