Helen Altman (1958) is an artist from Tuscaloosa, Alabama who works in photography, drawing, sculpture, assemblage, and textiles, often giving her work a humorous voice. In her earlier work, Altman made sculptures from household appliances, using humor to draw attention to more serious themes. Her pieces often juxtapose nature with artificiality, addressing themes of temporality, imperfection, and destruction within images of natural phenomena. Altman is also notable for her torch drawings of animals, created by soaking paper in water then burning an image into it with a propane torch. She received her BFA and her MA in 1981 and 1986 respectively from the University of Alabama. Three years later she earned her MFA from the University of North Texas, Denton. Altman has participated in numerous solo and group museum exhibitions throughout her career. Altman’s work is held in collections including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego.
