David Bates (1952) is an artist who lives and works in Dallas, Texas, best known for his paintings of the Grassy Lakes region of Faulkner County, Arkansas and the Gulf Coast. Bates produces paintings characterized by bold, thick brush strokes that reference American regionalism and still lifes that frequently connect to modernism. He also creates hand-painted sculptures in bronze, aluminum, and wood as well as works on paper. Bates received his BFA and an MFA from Southern Methodist University in 1975 and 1978 respectively. Since then, he has received national recognition and exhibited in museums across the country. Bates’ works are held in public collections such as the Dallas Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
