Dan Rizzie (May 23, 1951), a New York native and resident, grew up abroad in India, Egypt, Jordan, and Jamaica. These experiences and his knowledge of art history often contribute to the painter, printmaker, and collage artist’s work, manifest in his choice of materials and symbolism. Rizzie often incorporates filigree, historic decorative patterns, bold botanic imagery, and private encryptions into his artworks. Rizzie received his BFA in 1973 from Hendrix College in Arkansas where he was mentored by Don Marr and Bill Hawes and his MFA in 1975 from Southern Methodist University’s Meadow’s School of Art in Dallas. He has received commendations including the 2005 Distinguished Alumnus Award from Hendrix College. Rizzie’s work is held in collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.
