Sharon Sutton (1941), born in Cincinnati, Ohio, is currently a visiting professor at Parsons School of Design, adjunct professor at Columbia University, and professor emerita at the University of Washington. Between 1963 and 1982, Sutton earned five academic degrees, including a bachelor’s degree in music, master’s degrees in architecture and psychology, and a Ph.D. in psychology. She became an architecture educator in 1975. She has taught at Pratt Institute, Columbia University, The University of Cincinnati, and the University of Michigan, where she became the first black woman in the nation to be promoted to full professor of architecture. Additionally, Sutton is a printmaker and collagist who has studied graphic art in independent studios internationally. During the Civil Rights and subsequent Women’s Movements, she exhibited in New York City, promoting the inclusion of black and women artists. Sutton has received numerous awards, and her artworks can be found in collections such as the Library of Congress, the University of Michigan – Dearborn, and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
