Lowell Nesbitt
1971

Lowell Nesbitt (October 4, 1933 – July 8, 1993) was a painter and printmaker from Baltimore, Maryland, best known for his large-scale paintings of flowers, spanning up to thirty feet long. Nesbitt received formal training from the Tyler school of Fine Art at Temple University in Philadelphia and the Royal College of Art in London. Nesbitt worked in both a photorealistic style as well as one more similar to Pop Art. In addition to flowers, Nesbitt’s subjects often included studio interiors, piles of shoes, Neo-Classical facades of 19th century cast iron buildings, and Manhattan bridges. He even had the privilege of serving as the official artist for NASA space flights Apollo 9 and 13. Nesbitt’s massive home and studio in New York, a renovated police stable, was also worth noting as a gathering place for famous artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, and James Rosenquist. His work is held in collections such as the Library of Congress; NASA in Washington, D.C.; and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
